Blade

The term Blade is defined as the flat cutting edge of a knife, saw, or other tool or weapon, or the flat, wide section of an implement or device such as an oar or a propeller. Blade is my sixth prototype for the Automata Project. When designing Blade, I had no name for the prototype in mind. I wanted to display two straight tooth gears in the spur arrangement and just be creative with some tangent, radii and slots in the base design. After creating the two gears I laid out their centers on a piece of wood and started to create the base geometry to display the prototype. When I finished the geometry for the prototype bases it made me think of the blade on an icicle skate. I like the way Blade looks like it is constantly in motion.

Blade is a display of two straight tooth gears in the spur arrangement with 10 teeth, a 1:1 ratio. The gear movement is displayed between two bases created by using radii and tangents and features slots cut in the base to give it a mechanical look. The handle is a crank style handle designed to be parallel and flow with the base. The center of interest is where the two straight tooth gears mesh.
