Designing and Constructing Automata Artwork in Wood
The Automata Project with Herbert J. Scull
The Automata Project was conceived in 2018 to research mechanical movement, automata in wood. After years spent teaching and working in materials and processes, manufacturing, technical and engineering drawing I started to put the geometric shapes, (the bases), together with the mechanical movement. The idea was to put a new spin on Automata by bringing the movement out and displaying it between some geometrical patterns.
The purpose of this website is to display this artwork, make connections in the Automata community as well as interest others in this wonderful and exciting art. If you would like to get in touch with me concerning any of this artwork or would like to inquire on how you may acquire one of these prototypes, please feel free to contact me at the email link provided.
Thanks for stopping by the Automata Project, and please stop back by as I will be creating new prototypes and adding them to the gallery.
Automata is an Art Form
All prototype bases are designed and laid out with traditional drafting methods or generated 2D CAD patterns. Principles of geometry such as Geometric Construction are considered and applied. All the prototypes are handcrafted and are truly one of a kind.
While designing Automata Projects, I apply all nature, elements and principles of design to include:
- Ergonomics
- Anthropometrics
- Safety
- Appearance
- Function
- Texture
- Rhythm
- Proportion
- Balance
- Harmony
- Emphasis/Center of Interest
- Mass Form
- Colors and Tones
Benefits of an Automata Device
Automata devices are great teaching tools. They are perfect for classes in geometry, physics, and other math-related subjects as well as design, 3D art, and mechanical engineering courses.
In addition to their practical functions, automata devices are intriguing devices that make great interesting gifts for intellectuals. They are great art pieces that would look amazing on your coffee table, fireplace mantle, or desk. The perfect conversation piece for your home.
