Genesis
Description
Origin, source, root, beginning, commencement, start, outset are all terms to define the word, Genesis. Genesis is my second prototype I designed for the Automata project. After Quiksilver I was even more intrigued at this idea of “The Automata Project”. Quiksilver showed me that these designs in my head could be made. So it was with the Genesis that I felt like I really started getting onto this idea of mine. For this reason, I named the prototype the Genesis. I wanted to display three straight tooth gears in the spur arrangement. Once the gears were created, I placed their centers on a piece of wood and went about creating the geometry for the bases to display the gears.
It has often been said that design can come from many inspirations. Those inspirations can come from anywhere in life. In the spirit if this I was looking at a Sega Genesis game controller and was inspired by the lower two radii that Sega has designed for the ergonomics of your hand. I turned the controller up in my mind and saw the gears going across the top of it. It worked and you can clearly see it. So, for all you designers across many mediums, keep your eyes open. Inspiration is everywhere.
Genesis is a display of three straight tooth gears in the spur arrangement with 10 teeth, a 1:1 ratio. The gear movement is displayed between two bases created by using radii and tangents and features a hole pattern across its base to give it a mechanical look. I wanted to place the center of interest on the center gear, so I dropped it slightly as opposed to keeping it in line with the other gears.
