Falkor
Description
Falkor is a Luck Dragon. He is one of main characters from the Never-ending Story. Falkor is very wise, incredibly positive, dignified and a very sociable sophisticated being from Fantasia. He gives advice to people when they have lost hope in many things, they set out to do whether in a quest for what they seek or in some cases people and beings have given up altogether and lost faith.
~”Never give up, and good luck will find you” ~ Falkor’s wise and most famous line of the movie
Falkor is my seventh prototype for the Automata Project. With Falkor I was clearly thinking of doing “something bigger” for the Automata project. As a fan of dragons in mythology and the Never-Ending Story I wanted to create a base with somewhat of a “serpent look” Another one of my goals with Falkor was to display a gear ratio between two straight tooth gears in the spur arrangement. I also wanted these gears to be larger and have parallel slots in them as well. After getting the ratios to work I laid out their centers on a piece of wood and started to create the base geometry to display the prototype.
Falkor is a display of two straight tooth gears in the spur arrangement. The large gear has 14 teeth, and the pinion gear has 8 teeth, giving the prototype a 1.75 ratio. The gear movement is displayed between two bases and created by using radii and tangents and features slots cut in the base to give it a mechanical look. The handle is a handwheel style handle. The center of interest is right at the handle and where the two gears mesh.
